Climbing near Mexico City

I am headed to Mexico City at the end of June and was wondering if people have suggestions about where to climb and who to climb with. I am looking at possibly heading to Petrero Chico. Other suggestions/tips for climbing outside of the U.S. are welcome. I am bilingual (English/Spanish), which will help, but I would prefer to climb with guides or others based on recommendations. Thanks for any info!

Potrero Chico is fantastic, though not really close to D.F.

In terms of other international locations where they speak spanish:

Spain is it. Alpine, sport, trad, you name it. Within two hours of Madrid I can think of about 6 high quality places to climb. Barcelona has tons as well, but I am less familiar with Montserrat and the other sitios de catalunya.

In addition, Spanish climbers are super friendly and great hosts!

Good luck

Como te escribí en RC.com:

Lo mejor sería contactar a:

Vertimanía, tienda de montaña
www.vertimania.com.mx

Es la mejor tienda de escalada en México. Tienen 2 sucursales en Mexico, DF (Satélite y Mixcoac). Ellos te pueden enseñar donde y como y proveerte guías.

¡Suerte!

There is good climbing at the edge of Mexico City at a place called Los Dinamos de Contreras. There is also a good area right in the city near the University. Vertimania would be the place to contact for a guide.

El Potrero Chico is a must visit but it is 500 miles north near Monterrey. If you can make it on this trip by all means do so and don't be put off by hot weather. The way the walls are oriented there is shade somewhere all day. At EPC you wouldn't need a guide--the accomodations are a 5 minute walk from the climbing and it is a very easy place to navigate with most approaches being 10 seconds to 10 minutes from the road.

Hi Jeanne,

I've spent a round a year living in central Mexico and know of alot of good climbing areas. How far are you willing to travel? Some of the best areas are La Pena de Bernal and Canyon de Aculco both two or three hours from Mexico City. RC.com has good info on these areas, in Bernal it is easy to meet other climbers, mostly from Queretaro, who climb there on the weekends. Another not so famous area but with some good routes is the mountain La Bufa in the city of Guanajuato (where I lived) Anyway if you need more info just eemail me at vernonp9@yahoo.com. Have fun and be safe,

Pat Vernon
