After a day of gazing at the east wall while snowboarding at A-basin, I couldn't help but wonder about climbing one of the rocky couloirs at the far end of the east wall (outside the ski area boundary) It looks like some amazing steep snow climbing with a few rock steps to navigate. Im pretty sure this rocky section tops out on grizzly peak (13,427 ft). Seems like it would be a great day climb with a retreat back to Loveland pass. Does anyone have any information about routes or know of any ascents here?
I've also been wanting to climb this and snowboard down it myself. I think Spring is the best time due to avalanche conditions. Good link Brenta. I watched two guys ski down it a couple of years ago, it looks awesome.
I climbed one of the rock ribs that leads direct to the ridgeline a couple of years ago. I started just left of the major rib coming down and went after er'. It was pretty casual, maybe easy 5th at the hardest. You could definately carry a board up there and it would be worth it. Just a header on the avalanches, they come down pretty frequently from what I remember. You can park at the A-basin lot and just hike up and you only have to break trail for about a 1/4 mile or so. Best of luck. Oh' the rock is loose.
