Maybe I have missed some obvious answer, but what happens to old summit registers? After climbing a local peak, and finding the summit register in a deplorable condition, I resolved to replace it on my next ascent. But I wasn't sure what should happen with the old scraps of paper. What's commonly done?
I think there are formally groups that install/maintain these summit registers -- that's where they should be returned to. Likewise, they will usually provide you with a new summit register if you want to go replace one. You may have to poke around to see who handles this in your local area. For instance, here in Colorado I think it may be either the Colorado 14'ers initiative or the CMC. So, someone does typically retain these records. Maybe a google search or the front page of the register will provide some information.

After reading that thread, I think I'll contact the NM Historical Society, and deposit the originals with them. There isn't any formal Mtn club which maintains the registers here, but it seems like an easy enough thing to do. What would take more time is actually deciphering the information in said register as many of the pages are crumbling apart. Then spending even more time copying it into some legible account. But that way, everyone is appeased.
