Anybody have info on the Long's Peak accident this weekend? Rocky Mt. News has a small blurb about it:

From the NPS website... basically the same info, unedited. Apparently the rangers saw it occur.

Falling Tragedy at Rocky Mountain National Park

Date: September 3, 2006
Contact: Kyle Patterson, 970-586-1363

At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, Sunday, September 3, 2006, a 58 year old male from Louisville, Colorado fell approximately 800 feet to his death near the Loft between Longs Peak and Mount Meeker in Rocky Mountain National Park. Two park rangers on a climbing patrol witnessed the accident. The rangers reached the victim within 30 minutes of the fall. The man sustained massive traumatic injuries and was without a pulse when the rangers reached him. The victim was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m. A helicopter was used to recover and transport his body at 7:26 p.m

The victim and his hiking partner had hiked to the summit of Mount Meeker this morning and were descending near the Loft when the accident occurred. The victim’s name will be released in a follow up news release tomorrow afternoon, pending notification of next of kin. No other information is available at this time

Thanks for the link, Jim Matt. Good amount of info there. The story reminds me of an old quote said by one summiter to the other; "Congratulations on a job half done"! Beware of decents. The climb is not over until you're down.
