Hi! My partner and I are doing a route in RMNP on Sunday and I'd like to find some place near the Park to camp or bivy with my pup. My dog has an injured foot so I'm looking for a place where she won't have to walk or be carried too far. Is there any BLM land near by? I'm just looking to shave a couple of hours off the alpin-start. Thanks in advance. :-)
There are a few good spots for free camping that are pretty close to Estes Park. One option is to look for the Forest Access sign and a road on your right as you come to the crest of the hill on Highway 36 that leads down into Estes. Go up the steep hill on the dirt road past some houses and then it turns into a 4-wheel drive/high clearance road. But there is some nice camping up there.
The other options I know of are around Allenspark, and both are marked from Highway 7 with big brown "Forest Access" signs. One is on the east side of the road north of Allenspark and takes five or ten minutes to reach the forest boundary from Highway 7. Bear right at the fork. The other is reached by driving through the town of Allenspark itself and I am not as familiar with it. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of signs though so just keep an eye out.

As it was we just did a day trip. No camping. Thanks for the replies.
