Last night over beers a group of us could not come to a consensus definition on the word cragging. So I thought I'd expand our focus group:

What do you consider "Cragging"?

Cragging, to me, is messing around on a few or more, single pitch trad routes, or sport climbs. Another thing that comes to mind, when I hear 'cragging' is an easy bail option i.e., in inclement weather, when time is limited, or when I feel tired or lazy.

I think it also implies something about the area you're in. I can't really imagine going cragging in the Black Canyon, for example.

Sweet.

Furthermore, to elaborate on this topic, you would not say something like: "That Black Canyon is one bitchin' little crag." It would be far more correct and more superior to say something like: (At the start of a road tip perhaps) "We're going to the Blizzy Black Canyooooo! Mudda Fuckaaa!" One could most certainly say: "Hey man, Squat Rock has some good lines on it. That is one sweet little crag." However, no one would be caught dead saying something like: "That's wizz-ite beyotches! We be hittin' up da Turret Dome yo!."

I sincerely hope I helped.

Peace!

From Greg Child's Climbing: The Complete Reference to Rock, Ice and Indoor Climbing (Facts On File, Inc. NY, NY 1995):

Crag: A British word meaning a small cliff or rock outcrop. Cragging is rock climbing on such cliffs.

I defer to one of the greats.

Whatever I can get out and fire on command and be back for a beer before the next sunrise. The size & expediency of which a tea drinking Brit couldn't handle.
