I'm going to be going out to Arizona in about a month and wanted to know if anyone had any beta for the Deep Water soloing I've read about near Winslow. Is a Canoe a must? Is there nearby camping?

You can access the end of the canyon by putting your canoe/boat in at McHood Lake just south of Winslow. Camping is free on the left bank of East Clear Creek (McHood Lake is formed by damming the creek). To find the climbing just move up the reservoir and look for a crack/route you wanna try. I don't know that any routes are published as specific deep water solos. So far, it's just word of mouth between friends. Good luck.

Does anyone have any recommendations where I can rent a canoe for cheap in the Flagstaff- Winslow area?

Maybe REI in Phoenix.

Checked with them, and they don't rent out any canoes.

Monty,

Flagstaff maybe try:

Monte Vista Marine
3122 E. Route 66
Flagstaff, AZ 86004
923-526-5600 (Is this 928 area code?? - I cut & pasted)

Flagstaff Recreation Ctr
2403 N Izabel St, Flagstaff, AZ
(928) 779-1468

Aspen Sports
15 N San Francisco St, Flagstaff, AZ
(928) 779-1935

Powell Boat & RV Storage
Unverified listing
121 E Birch Ave, Flagstaff, AZ
(928) 645-2055

Don't know if they'd help you or not.

The other closest was Bullhead City (this should be a rental outfitter that you are looking for, but a little farther down the road):

Desert River Kayak
2649 Highway 95 # A, Bullhead City, AZ
(928) 763-3033

Hope you have a good time, AZ is a wild place.

You don't have to have a canoe. Turn right on the dirt road instead of turning left into the park/picnic area. Drive as far back as your vehicle will allow and hike down to the water. There are plenty of places where a little easy scrambling will get you to the waters edge.

Monty, call Summit Divers in Flag. Chuck the owner has a variety of ride-on-top kayaks, canoes and some inflatables. Be careful, as the water is a bit low and there are some jutting rocks about.

ciao

Just wondering if anyone has been up to clear creek lately? Is there any exposed rocks, is the water high enough? I'll be out there in a month so its time to get somewhat of a game plan.

Heading there this weekend. Any takers?

If it's not too late, the water level may be lower, but most of the good climbs should not be affected. I recommend using a depth checker - a rock on a 15ft string.

Thanks much Colin! Canoe is strapped to the top of the truck. Headin North shortly.
