travel stick clip

I travel a lot for work and frequently try to climb on work trips.  Have to fit all my gear in a carryon and if I'm sport climbing I don't bring a stick clip and hope to find partners with one.  Thinking about either getting a grip clip stick clip ( the kind that attaches to a stick) or the metolius rollup one.

I know how to use a stick and tape but would prefer to use one of the methods I mentioned above.

Re Metolius roll up- I also travel for work and wouldn’t want to give up that much real estate in my bag. The video of someone holding it looks like it’s a bit bigger than a softball. Also at nearly 2lbs and $225 I’d go with the one that attaches to a stick.

Trango Beta Stick Evo in the "compact" size is what I use. Fits in a carryon, fits inside of a backpack, and it fits inside of my gear totes too. Weighs 1 lbs.

It's only 8ft long when extended, that's not enough to reach the first bolt in some areas (for example old routes at Smith Rock) but it's fine for most routes in most places. Occasionally I have to climb a couple feet off of the ground and then use it. If you want to stick clip up a route it's nicer to have a smaller one like this hanging off of your harness.

Depending on your budget concerns, maybe just get a Metolius Superclip head and buy painter poles when you get to your destination, then give the poles away to dirtbags each time.  They will be stoked!

Anyone have issues carrying the beta stick on flights?  I have a friend that has a travel size one and they are able to loan it to me however I'm a little bit worried about having it confiscated

I have this (a MP member makes them, $25) and it works great paired with the metolius superclip

I keep an extendable monopod with me and attach the clip to the end of it. Works like a charm

I bought the grip clip as well. Haven't needed to use it yet but it looks great.  I recommend.

+++ gripclip.

I use it with a pair of trekking poles lashed together with ski straps (like for a pyramid tarp).

I've flown with my Skyhook (discontinued, alas) without issue. It has similar dimensions and a more dangerous-looking head.

Here's my dumb thing I made. That gripclip above is way smarter. I wish I would have seen that first.

I had this amazon basics monopod and it has this tightenable foot thing.

It's only about 5 feet long. Either the plastic or the monopod will break pretty quick.

It only took like 30 cents worth of plastic

...and 10 hours of learning how to 3d draw and print.

Carbon fiber fishing pole. 4.5 ounces, 16”, extends to 6’ or 8’ depending on your wobble tolerance. Great size for clipping your way up a route. Hardly notice it on your harness.

Get a Metolius Superclip head that should help

The best small stick clip I've had was a BD avalanche probe with a Superclip epoxied to the end. This is very light compact and would travel well. Probes available up to 330cm/10.5+ feet, but some are more wobbly than others... Similar in cost to some of the commercial options.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
