Item under consideration: new Arcteryx Serratus hoody.

Anybody see/feel/hold/wear this new softshell?

Is it thin and breathable?  Or thick and insulated?

Does the hood actually fit over a helmet?

Other impressions/thoughts.

If anybody made a light weight-sort-of-like-an-Atom top that could function as both a midlayer or an outerlayer, with a hood that actually goes over a helmet with room to spare...that would be cool!

Following. Looks like a more climbing focused version of one of my favourite jackets.

I’ve been on the search for a Gamma (LT) hoody for awhile with no luck. I just ordered one of these and can post some pictures and details once it arrives.

It sounds like it’s thinner than the Gamma, but maybe that’s better for breathability. I’m hoping to use this as an ice climbing shell.

I’ll update once it arrives.

Just got mine in the mail, here’s my initial impressions;

The material is way thinner than the gamma, it’s like if you just took the outside of a softshell and removed all the fleece/ insulation from the inside. The sides, armpit, and back are made of a stretchy/ thinner material that seems very breathable and could help with sweaty back from a backpack.

The fit is pretty standard from them, I’m a snug small in the atom and cerium, and this seems like it fits the same, perfect with a fleece and base layer underneath. The sleeves are very long however, but is made up for by the adjustable cuffs. They are also very wide, probably helping to fit extra layers underneath.

What I’m most excited for is the high pockets. I’ve been searching for a jacket with pockets like this for awhile and they’ll work perfect with a harness / backpack on. They however are only made of a mesh on the inside, so no warmth for the hands.

The jacket is pretty stretchy overall and seems like it’ll perform great mobility wise. Overall this is just a thinner, more stretchy gamma with a helmet hood.

If you'd rather pay 3 times less for the same thing check out the Rab Borealis.

Hahaha yeah it totally does! My Rab Torque is pretty much the same thing though, so I think I’ll just bring that!

Me too, can’t wait!

It's all about fit, Scott. Rab in XXL is too small for me. Arcteryx XL regular fit is perfect.

Fair point there, I'm more in the middle of the size range (Medium/Large in Arc'teryx and a Large in Rab) and in my sizes these are very comparable jackets.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
