Ice conditions Lee Vining
|
Trying to get out to climb at Lee Vining tomorrow… does anyone know of the recent conditions there? |
|

Cole - thx for pic. Looks like its setting up nicely. Any pics or conditions report of middle flow? |
|
Weather forecast for the region looks devoid of meaningful precipitation, I'm a bit worried about the route staying in shape or growing. Does anyone with more experience in the region know how route formations in the canyon play out? |
|
The ice is fed by a leaky wooden aqueduct. So it doesn’t need precip, which would generally be snow, anyway. |

I don’t know about June Lake. But Lee Vining should be okay. But others will know better than me. |

Update from this weekend. The approach is fine, snowshoes helped. Great conditions higher up in the canyon, smaller formations but they're fat. |

Hello all, it looks like SMG is no longer adding condition reports. Besides this MP thread, does anyone have a good link for Ice conditions on the east side? |
|
And besides desperately needing recent reports for Lee Vining, does anyone know how June Lake Roadside Ice is doing? Man, things look really challenging for this weekend. It looks like several days just barely below freezing in the coldest part of the night, with possible rain during the day. I'm worried I'll get there and not believe screws will hold, and then I've done all that driving for nothing. -TPC |

Spoke with some folks at SMG and Roadside is supposedly NOT in play this year. The plumbing that made the flows more legit, was removed. The supposed reason was NOT nefarious and I wont get into it here, but they did say it was out of service this winter. Call them for full details. They are looking into what it will take to get it back up next year. It seems LV's growth will fully depend on what these two ARs will do and what temps will be like during the second one. Keeping my fingers crossed. |

Having a mini heatwave right now. 64 deg. F. this AM in Bishop! Be careful out there. |
|
Bump. Anyone hit LV this weekend? Even with the summer temps. |

Bumpity Bump Bump |

Should be good to go, now. Major snow storm now, however. |

The ice was looking good yesterday. Bard/Harrington was non-existent, but the Main Falls and Chouinard's were in decent shape. Sadly, very warm temps are melting things quickly!. The Main Falls was dripping and pissing by 10am. Even warmer temps last night (well above freezing) and today as well. Let's hope for more Winter! |

Thank you very much for that report, @Tommy D. Every day this week the forecast in the lower canyon ( forecast.weather.gov/MapCli…;lon=-119.11486999999994) is for 26-28 F low, but 50s in the day. So, would you agree that means more of the same: the ice is melting by 10 AM and re-freezing at night? I guess there's no hope of much at June lake roadside? Did you look at it last weekend? Thanks, -TPC |

Here's the most important link for Lee Vining Ice: Ellery Lake Data Station . Up to 7 days of hourly data. I was surprised to see that it did freeze last night, for 12 hours even. So it's hard to say how those upper flows will hold up. Roadside is done for now. 30% melted out and pouring water yesterday. Same with Horsetail Falls. Stay safe everyone! |
