Christopher A.G. Jones

Edit: so I googled it. According to wikipedia he passed on the 17th. I am surely not the most knowledgeable of all the stuff he did, but from about 1968 and on he was on the first ascents of some of the biggest Canadian Rockies North faces. As far as I know the Lowe-Jones route on North Twin is still unrepeated, 50 years later, despite many attempts. He was one of the "fun hogs" who made the 3rd ascent of Fitzroy by the new "Californian" route (Chouinard, Tompkins, Jones, Dorworth, Tejada/Flores, 1968 I think). There are new routes to his credit in the Sierra, Alaska, and Peru, in addition to those in Canada, and the Fitzroy. I don't know anything about his climbing in Great Britain, before he immigrated to the US. I believe he made ascents of the Bonatti Pillar and Walker Spur in the early/mid '60's, IIRC. OH YEAH, he wrote the book "Climbing in North America ". We have a signed copy. Signed for and gifted to my wife actually. At one point my wife worked with/for Chris. |

Never had the pleasure of meeting but heard plenty of stories of his adventures. A life well lived. RIP. |

Climbing in North America: one of my early favorite climbing books. I still recommend it. Rest in peace Mr Jones. |

Wanted to share a link to his obituary published in The Telegraph. And screenshots for those who can't get around the paywall: |

my brother, bob, and I attedted his celebration of life a couple of weeks ago. i knew chris as the cllimber, but he was a great family man who became a true dad to his stepchildren, and devoted husband. that i did not know. i would see him at AAC gatherings, where he was always approachable, engaging, and hilarious. he will be truly missed throughout the local AAC family.
