Pay to climb ice?
|
If one were to open up an ice climbing wall at a ski resort, how would you monetize that? The wall would be a short walk through the lower part of the ski area. Obviously you would not charge lift ticket prices. And it wouldn’t be free. The ropes would be fixed like at a gym. Are there other places like this already? |

Portillo (chile) and Mendoza (Argentina) have something kinda "like that". South Korea & Japan i understand as well more as a gym as you describe |

Snow King in Jackson had something like this years ago. I believe that Exum ran it. |

I mean...it's nearly mandatory to pay membership dues at Ouray to get an anchor on the weekends. So yeah, I think it would work like that. |

Peabody anyone? |

Edmonton, AB, for one. https://www.yegice.ca/ |

I heard a podcast about a place in Minnesota where they make the ice wall in an old quarry. But I can’t find it online. How much do they charge in Ouray? |

Charlie Kissick wrote: They don't. It's do with the Colorado state law – specifically, the Colorado Recreational Use Statute or CRUS. So long as access is free then CRUS protects landowners against lawsuits from injured climbers. If they were to start changing they'd need to have much stricter controls to avoid accidents and potential lawsuits. |

Charlie Kissick wrote: Season membership is $75. It gets you early entry to the park, which on weekends can mean the difference between getting to climb and sipping your coco for a few hours waiting for something to open up. It is probably worth reading the ouray financials though to see what it costs to maintain an artificial park: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5588cbb3e4b086577bcb0c31/t/66992e04ed2c7c5fc528c70d/1721314823022/2024+End+of+Season+Report-compressed.pdf |

But if you are down there....consider portillo. Portillo and puente del inca its right next when crossing from Mendoza to Chile. You can park and walk 5 minutes to the ice. |
