Kinda blown away I never heard on this movie till now when a friend recommended it to me. "Third Man on the Mountain".

40 minutes in and it is one of the best climbing "mainstream movies" i've come across. Really delving into details with awesome shots of the alps, old gear, glaciers, rock, and real hard-man rock climbing. Would be curious to hear other's input on how accurate the simul-climbing/belay techniques are. And would be really cool to see contemporary shots of the glaciers for climate change reference.

Gaston Rébuffat directed the climbing scenes. I really enjoyed this film when it came out in 1959 or 1960. Based on a novel, Banner in the Sky, that was based on Whymper's ascent of the Matterhorn. I was the same age as the young actor (James MacArthur) .

One summer around this time I was coming down from a climb in Garnet Canyon behind Willy Unsold and his clients as they had descended from the Grand. In Lupine Meadows Willy let out a huge yodel and in the distance I could see his wife come out of their guide shack with her two children, calling back. The incident has stuck with me all these years because it was something right out of a Disney movie and so like a scene in the film. The color, the action, the characters, the beauty of the Tetons, all of it.

Written by James Ramsey Ullman. It was a young man's novel, with parallels to John Harlin II and III, in weird way. I read it as a boy and it was part of the hook that drew me into a life of climbing, just like Rudi. But I've never seen 3rd Man, now I must!

'North Face' is really well done.  Also 'Eiger Sanction'.  Spectacular climbing and great movies.  (I know OP requested no actors, but these are really superb stories and climbing cinematography on the Eiger)

Free Solo and The Dawn Wall. Meru is another epic one that’ll get your adrenaline pumping.

You will have to watch First Ascent. The movie about the battle of first ascent of Cobra Crack. One of the climbers just came back after 19 years and the story has a perfect ending.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
