Catching flak for solo climbing outside during lockdown

I’m still not over how aggravating it was to be treated as if weirdos like me were somehow furthering the pandemic by being 100% alone and outside - I demand written apologies

This only matters in Oregon and New Jersey.

I mean... are you making out with your gas station attendant? I'm in my own little bubble of air that the attendant isn't exposed to with a mask on and they are outside with great airflow and a mask. It's a respiratory virus. You get it by inhaling other people's respiratory droplets or particulate matter with the virus in it. This happens inside or in areas where you are exposed to wastewater coming from infected people, especially if it's air conditioned with recirculated air, especially if your mask is off and you're eating - or if you're climbing at a climbing gym with or without a mask. Not in the scenario you're depicting above where both people are masked and isolated from each other and are only contacting each other via passing the card - which is not how people are infected with COVID, which is a respiratory virus.

The car is literally a bubble and I am bubble boy in this scenario.

Ok. Sure.

But none of that is relevant for a couple reasons.

First, during the time period you are discussing we didn’t know most of that. People were bleaching their groceries because they didn’t know if it could be spread via surfaces. Now we know better and can act accordingly.

Second, the evidence we had mostly related to the hospitals in France and elsewhere being suddenly filled to capacity with covid patients. The concern wasn’t about you catching covid while you were soloing, it was that if something went wrong you may need hospital care and this deprive someone else of that space. Clearly things didn’t develop here the same way they did in other places but we were asked to refrain from risky activities to reduce the load just in case.

It seemed unreasonable but there were reasons behind it. Wholesale calling it ridiculous now ignores the reality of the time.

You probably don’t care but I felt like saying my piece.

So we should all not be climbing right now since the pandemic is quite literally at it worst ever at the moment? Given that new daily cases are currently climbing past 1 million per day - whereas during the lockdown it was at 70k per day. Can’t ignore the reality of the stats.

Curious to see if you practice what you preach and have been isolating this entire time, especially right now. Because I have a sneaking suspicion that you just climbed, skied, went to a restaurant, shared a car with other people, or visited your local climbing gym - all many times in the last year. Those social activities are what spread the virus. Not solo climbing where if you make a mistake you likely just die - the pearl clutching about hospital beds is beyond annoying. If you want to not take up a hospital bed, get the vaccine and don't socialize. That's the best thing you can do. Not climbing, period, doesn't help the cause, and it's a weak argument to make that it hurts the cause. Hospitals aren't overwhelmed because people are hurting themselves while recreating. They are overwhelmed because people don't get the vaccine and choose to hang out indoors in places with recirculated air.

None of us should be climbing with other people, technically, given the current stats. Since we were devout towards the cause of stopping the virus just a year and a half ago. Are we doing that though? Fuck no, we're all a bunch of junkies who were waiting for the line of social norms to break - I was just more frank about it early on by reducing my risk to near zero while we were busy cannibalizing each other and flexing on each other because climbers are a mix of devout social image driven holier than thou types and the anti social punk fuck-you-I’ll-break-your-rules-to-make-you-mad types that are locked in a forever-war over insignificant things.

Also, people weren’t doing dumb things like bleaching their groceries because they didn’t know - it was because they didn’t care to know, felt anxious, and wanted to feel productive towards minimizing their risk in some way that looks productive while also ironically not being productive at all. Nobody wants to read what the nerds are writing, the research concerning the transmission of respiratory corona viruses is not new - but a bunch of people want to either put on a safety theater for other people so that they don’t get judged or just ignore the safety measures outright because they’d rather believe it’s all a conspiracy to control people than change their lifestyle. No moderate, quality information driven opinions about how to reduce your risk while also living your life are allowed - those get chewed up since they aren’t far enough in one direction or the other - everything has to be political in America, we are a country that is hung up on appearances and alignments rather than substance.

Alright - last text post - here's a picture of some kittens cuddling to keep y'all happy:

Edit: I guess the kittens didn’t work and I'm getting roasted again (which is an MP meme by itself) - I want to state for the record that I’ve posted like ten memes in the last few pages - so with my current ratio of meme to text in mind I’m going to let my nuts swang here - I won't take these words down - since I know I've put in the appropriate amount of hard labor into memeing on this page.

MP when somebody writes literally any text in the meme thread:

To clarify this isn't a shot at any one take, I just quoted the most recent one. Not trying to get into a debate lmao
