Wish gun laws were made like that… or really All laws.

The footage of the Stanley Headwall was unreal.

That was one of the highlights of the movie for me. And climbing bare handed, so slowly...

I appreciated the film. I was gutted when he died and this film helped get some closure. Many of us remember MA from his posts on Cascade Climbers when he was a kid. So many crusty oldsters shat all over him online only to become fan boys when it became obvious how gifted he was.

What’s wild to me is that the Stanley Headwall footage was the second time he went up and soloed those routes, it was a recreation. Mind blowing to think how comfortable MA was on that terrain. What’s more amazing is how little some of his other ascents were mentioned in the film, that boy had a resume like no other.

I would have liked a little more of the Slesse in winter footage, but I get that tracking MA down was obviously an issue so Sender just used what they had given the circumstances.

Curious to hear others thoughts on this film. It left an impression of joy and sadness on me that I can't quite shake.

Same. It's gut-wrenching that part of the film was shot before he died and some moments interviewees are talking in present tense and then moments later they are talking in past. There's this impending sadness over the entire movie, even during the uplifting parts.

Must watch for anyone even remotely interested in climbing and/or alpinism and/or mountains.

I purchased it for streaming on Amazon a few weeks ago. Thought it was technically really magnificent, and Marc Andre was a generational talent as a climber. The film as a whole felt somewhat lacking—it felt too much like an ordinary climbing movie and did not seem to do justice to its deep, complex main character. Still well worth watching.

I definitely wish I hadn’t started this stupid thread. I should have known better than to give an opinion on covid on MP. As for the jerk who went through my tick list to try to call me out for being a hypocrite, I moved across the country last April, something you could have never known sitting behind your keyboard. You have no idea what I’ve seen and been through with this pandemic, and I think more people should remember that we’re all experiencing this differently, and maybe approach people with some compassion.

I will try to do the same.

maybe approach people with some compassion.

Unfortunately, you won’t find a lot of that around here. Speaking from experience.

Glad you enjoyed the movie!

Brilliant film, what an inspirational climber and person. Unbelievable talent and state of mind. Some of the best climbing footage I have seen, especially for mixed and ice.

My mind is so blown, wow, wow.

I can't imagine that the family doesn't appreciate having the film as a touchstone. Many others do.

As Jimmy Chin said about Free Solo, the film would have been finished had Alex died. Perhaps, you honor your friends by doing so. The filmmakers are often just as passionate about climbing as their protagonist, and sometimes close friends with the protagonist. Everyone has a shared interest in making a living off of their passion and why not.

Free Solo wasn't all that interesting to me, nor Meru, nor The Alpinist, nor Dawn Wall, nor most of the old ones. But, films can act like a mirror and make us think about our own actions. To me, films like Meru point out just how foolish mountaineers can be. That's worth sharing.  And sometimes it's nice to look back at the pioneers who were seen as extreme in their day. I am glad the movies get made.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
