Living in Canon City

Canon City peeps input please-, Climbing?-Climbing gyms-Backcountry skiing--Weather-Where to live with views of mountains? To leave Salt Lake or to stay Hopeless Utahans - |
|
I live 25 miles east of CC. Fremont county has, I think, about 17 prison facilities there, including the federal SuperMax. Shelf Road is not far and the Sangre de Christos are relatively close. |
|
Don't quote me since I'm new to CO, but closest climbing gym is probably in the Springs. Shelf road is super close but there's also the Wet Mountains and some other areas there starting to develop in the area. Looks like a good area for white water rafting also. |

The weather is great in the winter, at least compared to Wyoming. And also pretty sure we got served fry sauce somewhere, so coming from Utah, you should be fine. Plus royal gorge is a must see |

Great sport climbing in the winter. It is hot AF in the summer time. |

Canon city is whatever the adjective is below miserable for most people. It is close to shelf road which is decent winter climbing and has good fall bouldering nearby. Pretty unbearable in the summer months and in terms of lifestyle. Theres no way I’d ever leave SLC for Canon City…and I’m not a huge SLC fan from my time there |

I would not move there. I live in Pueblo, 30 minutes away. I’ve been a lot. Yes it’s closer to the mountains and climbing but the Springs or Pueblo aren’t much further. In southern Colorado, if I run into a racist or someone running a trump flag, or stockpiling guns. It’s canon city. No gym. Maybe 3 good places to eat. Are you single? Good luck dating.

I pretty much agree with what others have said. I would not want to live there. It's been labeled "Prison Valley". At least one unsolved murder I recall sends a chill up my spine. Westcliffe puts you in the Sangre de Christos and I spent years soloing the lovely granite formations in nearby Hardscrabble Canyon. Cold in the winter, however. I live in Pueblo West (a ruburbs) about ten miles from the city of Pueblo. The YMCA has a nice climbing wall and the university has something too. I don't know if there are other gyms. Colorado springs, however, is only thirty or so miles north on I25. |

Canyon City is going to need a few thousand hipsters with venture capital cash before it gets the Salida makeover, but it's possible. Give it, oh, 40 years? |

I lived in CC for a few years. It’s not the greatest, but there is good access to shelf, the wet mountains and beyond. I had very few friends in town and frequented the same few places for coffee etc… not too many places you can be running alone on nice trails 10 min from town. I lived in a funky little apartment on Main Street, could walk most places but Salida has a lot more going on for sure. I live in salt lake now… |
|
Why is Salida being brought frequently? Did I miss something… |

Stephen Szyszkiewicz wrote: It’s like an hour away from canon city though...that’s not that close if the OP is trying to work or be in canon city for any reason. If being an hour away IS a viable option though I would recommend Colorado springs over Salida as it has more opportunities for employment, arguably easier access to the mountains, and more of a “night life” than Salida. if you don’t mind being an hour away from canon city and enjoy being more disconnected with city life then I’d recommend Salida |

I am 28 years old and moved to Cańon City over a year ago. No climbing gym or community (any sort of young adult community) however, I moved here from Miami and I enjoy the slower pace and cheap cost of living. It is difficult to find climbing partners for the multiple climbing spots within 30 min (not just shelf, many spots in the wet mountains being developed now) but I have begun to explore the sangre de Cristos and I like it more than RMNP simply to not have to deal with crowds. Ive been holding out hope things would turn around as COVID restrictions lifted but there’s just not enough young people here. I think I have about 5 friends in total here in town. I know a climbing gym would solve all of the negatives this town has but from what I’ve gathered the local officials don’t want one and I haven’t heard anything about one coming. It was the perfect place to ride out COVID though and you can’t beat the weather or climbing conditions in winter (summer sucks, float the river) |
