Is dispersed camping along Tioga Pass road just outside the Tuolumne Meadows park entrance reopened?

From Inyo NF website: "Open: Wildernesses in the Inyo Mountains and the White Mountains, front country dispersed areas throughout the forest, developed sites, resorts, and recreation resident cabins." Does "front country dispersed areas" mean it's ok to camp? On the map it looks like the dispersed sites/parking lots along Tioga Pass road outside the gate (around Ellery and Tioga Lakes) are not part of Hoover or Ansel Adams wilderness. Has anyone been up there recently?

I'm not sure if they're officially open but 9k isn't signed as closed and I wasn't the only one parked there last friday. I didn't stop at Ellery but there were plenty of sprinters there saturday morning.

Pretty sure Hardin is still officially closed.

Camping was happening outside toulmune this past weekend. Hardin flat had signs up saying no camping. Good luck.

The forest order suggests dispersed camping in the front country is ok in Inyo, however using a stove to cook is not allowed.

Are there any other good alternatives to hardin flat on the west side of the park? I'm coming from SoCal, so preferably something off of 41 or 140. It looks like all of the campgrounds outside of Briceburg are also closed :(

Dispersed camping is prohibited in certain areas of Inyo NF, including Lee Vining Canyon. I don’t know the exact geographic extent of this prohibition or the degree of enforcement. A lot of people camp in various spots above the 9000’ level on the Tioga road. Maybe the prohibited area is just along the road in the canyon bottom, or maybe there’s just no enforcement.

Yeah I think it was never allowed and never enforced in the first place.  So have at it.

There's nothing out the 140 gate besides a pullout where people park and a campground down the road but no bathrooms or water at the pullout and apparently the hotel tries to put a stop to it. The gas station bath rooms are closed to. You used to be able to camp at the flag pole at Mobil mart in lee vining and the outside bathroom stays open and there's water spouts.

All the normal dispersed camping spot off Hwy 41 are out. Sierra NF is still closed.

Looks like dispersed camping in Stanislaus natl forest is allowed again, starting tomorrow (16th), unless something changes.

Am I missing anything? Have people heard if the ban is being extended?

As far as I understand, there is no dispersed camping west of Lee Vining and the rangers can ticket you if they so choose. The amount of people that do it suggest that it is not well enforced, but we certainly saw them clear a bunch of people out earlier this year. Not sure if anyone got fined.

Does anyone have suggestions for dispersed camping in the 395/120 area?

Mark Frumkin · · Bishop, CA · Joined Feb 2013 · Points: 52

Yes, pert-near anywhere east of 395.

Yup^ Tanya: Look for any FS or BLM land east of 395.  Stick to established roads of course. There's dispersed camping - its a tolerable amount of extra mileage to enter the park. IMPO.

Chase, are you referring to a current order pertaining to the fire season, or in general?

And anywhere you “disperse camp” make sure to carry out all your garbage and carry out or at least fucking burry your shit rags. The amount of increased traffic and impact these areas have seen blows me away. It took me a very short amount of time recently to gather a sizeable amount for export. If your are going to enjoy these opportunities at least be respectful.

DO NOT BURY SHIT. JUST PACK IT OUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Some animal, dog, whatever will get curious and dig it up. 2 doggie bags and a little cat litter if you're really nervous. We'Ve BeEn OVeR tHiS bEFoRe!!

In general. I don't feel like digging to find the info on the forest service website, but its there. IIRC that area has extra environmental protections for one reason or another, but I could be wrong. I also spoke to the camp host at one of the campgrounds along tioga pass, who confirmed it is illegal to dispersed camp anywhere along the road. The dispersed camping is on the other side of lee vining way far away from the park entrance.

This..... and I find that instead of freezing ass mornings it’s warmer- so it’s easy to get moving -go to the Mobile Mart - do your business, wash up with hot water, get food, coffee, a lunch to go and you will be up and climbing way before the people in the regular campground are even out of their tents/sprinters thawing out. Tried and true.

Mobil is closed for the season..
