Fred Beckey is every local crag’s legend.
Everybody knows that.

Everybody knows that. But do you know who solo'd Outer Space naked back in the 70's?

Although I moved out of Tucson a few years ago, I’ll cut to the chase and throw down Ray Ringle, EFR and Jim Scott. My new local crags (2): Todd Fucking Skinner and Dennis Horning.

The stettner brothers (put up stettner ledges on longs peak and a bunch of other routes which were considered the hardest in the world at the time (I think back in the 20s and 30s but can’t fully recall my history. Tommy deutchler is another absolute legend sending what was basically a free solo of bagatelle back in 1965 which was 12+ r/x. A lot of the original “hard men” of devils lake went on to put up the hard classics in eldo. If you haven’t watched D.L.F.A I highly recommend it for any climber. I think it can be found on Vimeo

1. Peter Croft in a good way
2. that old dude whom solos all over the beginner routes getting progressively more drunk, high, and sketchy until he can barely talk and just chats up anyone who makes eye contact... him in a bad way

Crump's lines are so great, really nice guy too! When I climbed at E-rock around 2002-05 he was in, errrrr, not the best climbing shape. This big dude in a football jersey would come lumbering up to a group, talk with them about whatever line they were on from a very informed perspective, and they'd just be like "who the hell is this guy, and how does he know so much about climbing?" Later they would usually figure out that he was the FA. There are lots of local legends at my current home crag, the NRG. Doug Reed is the most obvious, and most shadowy as well. A Doug Reed sighting around here is a big deal!

Jim Erickson and the fact that he’s one of my good friends and he’s the nicest, most humble dude in the world makes him so much more special as a person.

In Arizona, some BITD names...
David Lovejoy, Karl Karlstrom, and Scott Baxter—some spectacular routes at Granite Mountain (with sandbagged grades).
Then we have Bill Sewrey, Larry Treiber, Jim Waugh, Bobbi Bensman...
Bill Forrest, Lynn Hill, and Layton Kor as drive-through climbers.
Maybe some AZ folk with more complete knowledge of local climbing history (and recent years) can add to the list.
