Spray painted trail in Pine Creek

Anyone know the story behind the red spray painted rocks every 10ft or so along the trail in Pine Creek?  Some are only a few feet apart.  They go at least as far back the canyon as Dark Shadows.  Was this done by the park or a hiking group or a vandal?

Damn vandals. This is why we can't have nice things. People piss me off.

I’ve seen that style of marking a trail. Pretty lame, I don’t know the philosophy saying that’s the way to go, but I seriously doubt vandalism (although you could argue the results).

I may remember wrong but hasn't this happened in RR before?

Anyone know the story behind all the bolts  in Pine Creek?  Some are only a few feet apart.  They go at least as far back the canyon as Dark Shadows.  Was this done by the park or a climbing group or a vandal?

You might be thinking of when someone painted orange and purple dots the length of the trail to the comedy crags.... just on the outskirts of RR

I'm so glad someone beat me to this. The number of impacted rocks counts over ten, and some have white dots as well.

Please consider bringing 60grit sandpaper to smooth things out if you're in the area soon. All of the tagged rocks and taped trees are either on an obvious trail, or are in the creek bed.

I'll be bringing sandpaper with me next time just in case it's still there.

Is this the same group that spray painted the obvious trail up turtlehead? Looks like their handy work.

Green spraypaint dots marked the trail into First Creek Canyon last time I was there...

On a lighter note, my idiot roommate in college went hiking with a bunch of his idiot friends. They were ill prepared. The trail was marked with white painted rocks every so often. It was done by the forest service, in an acceptable way. It was April in Virginia, and they awoke to a few inches of snow. The snow completely hid the trail markers, and they eventually found a Ranger driving around, and flagged him down for a rescue. Mind you this was a group of 20-year-old man, no immediate danger, just barely camping in the woods. They were basically wearing tennis shoes, so the snow was not great for them, but no danger of frostbite. Anyway, moral of the story is, everyone gets what’s coming to them. I guess.

Oak Creek Canyon from the first pullout past the park exit has the red dots as well. Not sure about the other trails there.

My partner and I determined this week that it is likely the work of a well meaning idiot. I saw them in Oak Creek yesterday as well. It’s unfortunate to say the least.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
