Patching down jacket
|
Hi all, My MH Ghost Whisperer jacket recently had an unfortunate run in with an overly friendly dog with apparently sharp nails and incurred 3 half inch rips across 3 baffles. MH quoted me $80 for a repair or suggested I patch it myself. If I used some repair tape, would that be OK to last for a while? Or should I actually get it patched? I also called Rainy Pass and they quoted me around $65+shipping. Thanks! |

I patched a 2" rip in my jacket last October using clear packing tape. Since then it has been worn for about 100 hours and the tape patch has held strong. Cheap, effective, ugly fix. |

Ok, good to know. I'm not really fussed how it looks since they are small tears and it's near the hip so not in obvious places. I just don't want to do something that will last only a little while before requiring me to ultimately get it repaired anyway. Thanks! |

Get a "tenacious tape" patch. |

Lena Chita got it. Properly applied tenacious tape will fix the jacket for life. |

+1 for tenacious tape. Often you can get a color close to the same as the jacket, or you can go with a black or neutral that you'll use on everything that needs a patch. |
|
+1 for tenacious tape. We used the clear one on my girlfriends arc teryx Cerium lt. Works great. |
|
+3 for tenacious tape. Patched numerous down products over the years and it sticks forever, even during the annual wash. |
|
Yup, tenacious tape. Patches jackets and tents with that stuff and it’s held up for years. |

Tenacious tape worked for me. |

Duct tape for the hardman look Local seamstress at your local dry cleaners for a cheap solid repair. |
|
+8 for tenacious tape, used it on some trousers at the ankle and it held up for 4 years. |
|
Type a tear aid had worked great for me! |

Something new and different. That's what the people want. |

tape it and seam seal it, it'll last forever |

Tenacious tape will last longer than the fabric on the jacket, I have used it to repair just about everything possible. Always round the corners off so it doesn't peel up, you don't have to use a very large piece of the rips are 1/2" I would do like 3 patches 1" long and 1/2" wide maybe slightly bigger but not much. Adheres best to ripstop IMO, better than anything I have ever found and I doubt MHW would patch it any differently. To cure the tape I always throw it in the dryer after applying, or heat the tape up with a hair dryer or heat gun (be careful not to overheat if using heat gun). That will also help the tape conform to the fabric. I would say this will last longer than the life of the jacket, buy yourself a roll or two of gear tape you will start using it for everything nylon/ripstop. |

Personally I'd get the clear stuff |

Tenacious tape the whole jacket. Never have this problem again. |

OP - if you've lost down from that spot due to the tear, PM me and I'll get you a handfull you can stuff in there before you tape it. |

All you need to do is to apply a repair patch to the tear. I suggest that you use the repair tape brand called "fixmytear" since it is super strong and lasts a long time. Cheaper than paying for it to be sewn back together professionally when more tears will eventually pop up anyway. Good luck. |
