Some Bozo with an expensive toy but not much for brains was flying a drone today over the Flatirons.Swooping over climbers and really being a jerk.
First according to City of Boulder regulations it is illegal, not to mention the FFA and the State of CO.
Are we climbers going be forced to carry while climbing and blast your little drone from the Sky? bouldercolorado.gov/osmp/ru…

What if the person was taking off and landing from their own house on Baseline Road (private property), then overflying Open Space? I'm not sure it is completely clear in that link.

Not illegal per FAA if under 0.55lbs within line of site, not commercial, not closer to airport than 5 miles, under 400ft AGL, and operated in safe manner. Of course... operating one so that is annoys others is indeed a "jerk" move.

I was bouldering up in the Satellites yesterday and didn't see or hear this. The only unnatural sound I could hear was some marching band. ;)

Luckily being a jerk is not illegal...

According to CDC It'd be safer to discharge a firearm into the air at a moving target than be an annoying jerk.

I was wondering how long it would take for this to run into the Gun Nuts thread.

I was on the first a few weeks back and had the same experience. They are obnoxious. I would probably throw a rock at it if it go too close.

Next thing you know, the drones will be carrying spray paint to graffiti-up the 1st flatiron summit.
Carry a small fish casting net in your pocket, the kind with very small wts attached, and throw it over the drone when it gets too close. That should take it down, or tie a long runner to a biner and try the same thing...
I heard that the Neptune location will be reopening as a drone supply store after the holidays. Drones and BBQ.

I was scrambling on the third flatiron on saturday around 12pm.

While down climbing just after the chimney I thought I was about to be bombarded with a huge swarm of hornets only to find a drone pop up into view.

Freaked me out a little bit and was pretty annoying, but not overly intrusive.

I have a feeling that after christmas we will be seeing a huge increase in the number of drones out there. Kinda like the huge increase in the number of Gopros that you see on the slopes after the holidays.

I am not sure what can be done about limiting the use of these things, but maybe its a fad and will quickly go out of style.

It is within 5 miles of the Boulder airport, and the City of Boulder has regulations in place about drones, paragliding, and ballooning within city open space. You are certainly welcome to do those things over Boulder, but you cannot takeoff or land on property that doesn't belong to you if you if the owner doesn't allow it.

They don't bother me that bad at a safe distance.

Unfortunately drones are something I expect we all will have to get used too. They are not going anywhere but UP in uses and affordability. Here are some numbers to think about when looking to the issues in the future.

2016 DRONE NUMBERS

They can do with a drone (and a go pro) what would have taken a $2000+ helicopter rental and weeks of planning only 3-4 years ago.

In this article/vid. Red-Bull goes fully Pro-drone for climbing.
redbull.com/us/en/adventure…

Or this video mini, doc thing, with some decent drone footage.

or MrSteele and his girl-friend seem like cool people too.

Pretty decent results. Maybe they can make them quieter someday?

Cheers!

Guess it is safe to say ESPN does not need to advertise their coverage of the Drone Racing League here.

No worse than inconsiderate people with BT speakers in their backpacks or around boulders. Really nothing to get worked up over.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
