Pretty cool I guess... to see him in a normal sense.

Sounds like he's just like Dean though- Obstinantly believing that his soloing will not result in death. Which may be true.... But he's not going to stop, and thus he is kind of just tricking himself into thinking it's a safe way of climbing.

Anyway I don't mind. It's fascinating to see him rationalize like that. Dean Potter was doing something way dangerous, and was essentially a reckless guy. Alex could have some similarities, I don;t know, it's worth considering.

Matt, I thought that film came out well! It was more balanced than some of the other Honnold shorts.

theres been 2 solo falls from folks i know personally this year around here

one was a fall on something way below his grade .... fortunately it was only 15-20 feet or so and onto even ground

the second was a slip off the 4 pitch of multi ... the guy slid down the slab got caught in the branches of a tree, passed out and when he woke up he was on the ground all covered in blood ... he got up and walked home ...

he also went back and started soloing the next day

this gentleman also fell soloing 60 foot or so off another climb years ago, his head just missed the bench in that case

now you may thing its "reckless" ... but some of these folks do a few thousand solo pitches up and down in a year ... so after 10-20 thousand pitches its probably a matter of statistics till one moment of inattention or a single slip catches up with you

they do what do do and it none of my bizznizz as long as no one else gets hurt

;)

Yeah, with so many on the wall films, it's nice to get a little more perspective. Seems to be a pretty transitional point in his life too...

Anyone who solos believes that they will not die soloing. Nothing new .

How do you know he is not going to stop? He has written and talked about when and why he would stop soloing.

I'm pretty sure Alex is aware of the risks and is not tricking himself into anything. He is just willing to take that risk.

Bingo. Although it was interesting to hear him say "if someone told me for sure I would die soloing, I'd probably just become a sport climber." So to him, the death risk is very calculated and definitely not "for sure."
