HEEEELP!!! Gimped ankle climber bored out of his mind in Golden.

Sprained my ankle pretty badly last week in a *gasp* HIKING accident. And now I can't climb for a couple weeks. This presents a problem, because I'm a terribly non well-rounded person who doesn't do much but work and adventure outdoors. I've only lived in CO for a few months, and have climbed every free day I've had. But now I can't, and I'm loosing my mind with boredom.

Anyone have any ideas? Cool stuff to see. Museums? Restaurants. cool hikes that are relatively flat and walking boot/cane friendly?

Can you ride a bike? Lots of outstanding road & mountain biking around here.

Perhaps kayaking or some other type of floating activity would be fun.

I'm in the same boat as you, willeslinger. I'm reading a lot these days.

At least when I broke my wrist In February I was able to go mountaineering. Had some awesome adventures Peak bagging in the North Cascades and the Olympic Peninsula in WA.

Kayaking sounds genius, big investment though

I don't recommend hiking around in the walking boot so much unless your stride is normal. When I was in a walking boot, my hips weren't level because the walking boot is elevated compared to the sneaker on the good foot and it messed up my hips. You don't want your injury migrating around your body as you compensate for whatever's injured.

I am curious to know if this happened to anyone else.

In the meantime you can do all your trip planning (drive time, campsites, contact #s) now, make some folders of info on your computer, so after you are healed and then do your ankle exercises, you're set.

Impressive, but a word of warning, don't overtrain while injured. Torn meniscus, and now a bitchy elbow from so much hangboarding and such. Be smart.

I feel ya man. I rolled mine really bad last friday playing basketball (loud crack, immense pain all night). Not only bored silly over the weekend, but it was hot as balls too in our apartment. So miserable, i sucked it up and played touch rugby on Tuesday and Thursday even though it was still extremely tender and swollen. Climbed some easy stuff I knew I wouldn't fall on, too. 9 days later, still tender, but I think getting out on the ankle and stretching has helped it heal faster.

It looks like I have a tibia stress fracture after running in the Pikes Peak Ascent. :-( Doesn't seem fair to break a leg just running. Gonna be six weeks if the x-rays confirm a break. I am wondering about cycling, if that doesn't work, maybe swimming?

Try the American Mountaineering Center Museum and AAC Library in downtown Golden.

Things to do in Denver with a bad hoof:

  • Surf the mall shuttle buses. You stand in the isle with feet in line front and back, and don't hold onto anything.
  • Go to Washington Park around lunchtime and observe the runners. Some of them are spectacular, if you know what I mean. 16th St. Mall works well too.
  • Epoxy a quarter on the sidewalk on Colfax Ave anywhere between Logan and York. Stand back and observe.
  • FB friend Shawn Mitchell and be a total contrarian to everything he writes.
  • Visit the Clyfford Still museum, then the Colorado History Museum.
  • Have a breakfast at the Mercury Cafe
  • Find a chile stand, stand downwind of one of the roasters.
  • Roadtrip to a hot springs
  • Hand out Romney flyers at Boulder's Pearl Street Mall
  • Track down where the USA Pro Cycling Challenge is happening on certain days. Especially look for the Lookout Mountain/Golden leg.

Long tour's out because of the bad ankle, better just do a lot of short ones. There's always EXTREME white water tubing on Clear Creek if you don't have a boat!

That's it. That was my advice. I'm headed there today at 12:30. Brilliant Kbird!
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
