I am in okc for the week and was hoping to go to Wichita mountains but this heat is pretty intimidating. Does anyone know what time of day the narrows is shaded and whether or not there is water in the creek right now?

Thanks!

Don't go, it is too hot. The U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife has also shut down Charon's Gardens due to the heat.

We are having record highs this week... The coolest day in the forecast for Medicine Park this week is 108. If you really want to climb I recommend a predawn start and be at the base of the wall at daybreak to take advantage of the mid 80s "lows".

i have been several times during the past few weeks. I dont mind the heat. Yes its very hot though. I would take lots of water. I recommend at least 6 liters of water. Freeze it ahead of time. There is some water in the creek in the narrows, but it is not flowing and probably pretty hot and rancid for drinking...unless you filter it with a pump. Please do not swim in the creek. It is against refuge regulations.

The narrows does have some shade throughout the day. Early morning sunshine wall will be shaded....but not for long. Mid morning parts of lichen wall will go into the shade. I climbed there a couple of days ago and it wasnt bad if you stay in the shade. We had a predawn start on getting in there, and stayed all day so we could hike out when the temps began to cool down.

Leaning Tower and zoo wall have full morning sun. Leaning tower keeps sun most of the day. Zoo wall should get a little shade in the late afternoon, although i did not climb there this past weekend to confirm that.

If you can endure the heat, enjoy... Otherwise i would not recommend climbing there. Just take a min of six liters of water. I took four two weekends ago and ran out long before returning to the car. Made for a long miserable hike out. With the six frozen this past weekend, i had about a quarter to a half a liter left when i got back to the car and i felt pretty well hydrated.

Hey Lance, how's it going? I have been m.i.a. the last few months, broke my left leg on a huge fall. Just now getting into the swing of things again and will be free this Fall to do some climbing. Not climbing as hard as I once was, due to this freaking injury I am coming over. I have been thinking about hitting RRG or Yosemite up early in the Fall once the weather cools down. Also been looking at some cheap flights to Europe for an oversea's run again. You interested?

Brent, sorry to hear about the leg, glad you're getting back into the swing of things! I've been trying to work out some details on a trip around new year. I'll get in touch, Europe sounds like a good plan.

Hope you're making it through the heat okay. I planned ahead and made trips to the Cascades and Tetons during the hottest part of the summer.

ok, an update on the narrows. Went again yesterday and climbed in the narrows. Early morning the East side of the creek is in the shade. Wizzard wall, asleep at the wheel, and sunshine wall are in the shade. Leaning tower and zoo wall is full sun by morning, but both get shade by mid to late afternoon. Zoo wall at the dihedral and crazy alice start to get shaded first. Prob by around noon. Lichen wall gets sun early morning, but by mid morning hits the shade and stays that way all afternoon.

Thats about it..besides the fact that it is still hot. Our thermometer was reading 113 in the shade. I took 1.75 gallons of water that was frozen and it was just about the right amount. I still had a little left over at the end of the day.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
