Hello fellow Eurps, a merc friend of mine is flying out in March and wants to ice climb. I want to head to southern france for some sun and limestone, the german winters being what they are. To compromise I thought I'd take him to THE classic WI 3/4 ice climb in the western alps on the way to Avignon area. Problem is I have no idea where THE classic long ice climb is in the western alps. The climbing should be conveniently situated between Frankfurt Germany and Verdon France!
Can you please suggest some best of the best long ice climbs for me to drag him up (more probably, vice versa)? Thinking there has to be a classic gully climb to do thats 2-500 meters long that'll still be in condition early in march. Will need info on where to find info on climbs suggested as I have not ice climbed in Europe and have no guide books (obviously part of the problem!)
Yes I was going to add Chere C also. Or why not the Mallory, Porter right under the Midi lift. Not really a ice climb but certainly long with a lift right at the top so no hike home. And the technical problems are easy so you can go fast.
