Down climbing sweaters?

Thomas: I had a Dachstein from years ago, now have 2 or 3 normal wool sweaters around in various condition and use them. Have no idea if they are still made or sold here
Dane: I'm getting colder out there these days so 3 layers is a minimum for me to ice climb or ski all day. Close fitting garments made today for layer 2 don't feel right on me, and I don't see spending the money for a pricy down sweater made with waterproof Goretex being the solution. Thin underlayer, wool sweater second, down or old Pategonia 'synchilla' fleece jacket if needed for third layer, and the weatherproof jacket to finish is my usual. I haven't bought any new outerwear gear for over a decade as it's all holding up fine.

"Are Dachstein sweaters still available and if so where?"

Yes they are still available afaik. Just no one importing them.

Not much into buying new stuff myself. But the difference in gear and clothing even in just the last 10 years for climbing, ice climbing and apline in particular, is remarkable. Easier movement, better breathing and much lighter for the warmth and protection.

I have a Dachstein sweater which I got from IME around 1981. It is well worn out. I am thinking of getting a wool Filson jacket-shirt to replace it. I realize the advantages of synthetics but I have gone almost entirely to wool sweaters and underwear - it has a nicer feel to me than the synthetics.

Thomas, I live near Seattle, in the land of Filson. They have some very nice wool sweaters. If you like your Dachstein, the Outfitter Sweater (a modern Dachstein?) and Guide are both of a similar quality and weight.

Finally, all I can think of when I read this is:

Yeah I sweat climbing up or down, btw down is for bags or anything in town.

I got a Nano puff pullover this fall. It is wicked warm for how light it is. It replaced my old puffball pullover and I think it's nearly as warm. It's a great piece of gear and I'm generally wearing it over my R1 hoody.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
