Climbing Near Vernon, Utah

The town of Ophir was developed as a mining town, and now consists of a small community with a few mining exhibits for visitors. Most of the rock here is limestone. Be careful of rock-fall on newer routes - this area is seeing a lot of development lately so a helmet is always a good idea! Take Highway 36 South from Tooele, turn left onto Highway 73 toward Lehi and Ophir - the turn off 73 to Ophir Canyon is clearly marked. The drive is roughly 15 minutes from Tooele. You can also go West on 73 from Lehi (I-15 South from Salt Lake City) or from Redwood Road (Highway 68 South from Western Salt Lake Valley). Drive past Eagle Mountain and Cedar Fort, the right turn to Ophir will be clearly marked.

A cave near the Portwoods Walls. Park near Portwoods Wall and hike 5 minutes up an overgrown trail to the cave that can be seen from the road.

This area has many trees right around the wall so shade can always be found. Four or Five routes currently exist on the wall immediately next to the road, but there are many others just around the corner to the right.It should be noted that there are 4 or 5 more climbs (that I know of) around the corner on the right with a good trail leading to them. This area is called Haunted Woods and is in the ophir canyon section.  2.2 miles up from the cattle guard is a pullout on the Right. Walk across the road and down into a stream bed that is usually dry - may be wet in spring. The wall runs parallel to - and can be seen from the road
