Featured Trad, Sport, Bouldering, and other popular climbing routes and climbing areas Tillamook, Oregon.
This is essentially a catch-all area for what little climbing might be found in the Coast Range west of Portland and throughout the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests, state parks along the beaches, Siuslaw National Forest, BLM lands, and private timber lands and along Hwy 101. There isn't much out here; what does exist is probably wet and crumbly. Bolts near the coast should be considered highly suspect. Drive west from Portland, or up the Coastal Highway 101
Ujahn turned me on to this decent bouldering spot. Don't go out of your way to go here but if you are jonesing and happen to be here during low tide..... Walk through the famous Oceanside, OR tunnel on the North Side of the beach that goes under Maxwell point at low tide. Turn left as you exit and voila, you're looking at the backside of Maxwell Point! The most solid rock within 14 miles if not more. 2 points, if you happen to be here in the area, worth stopping to stretch your arms, if you are here at high tide it may be shallow water bouldering so don't bother:-) The "Blue Agate" restaurant on the corner across from the parking has great breakfasts, or you can also simply grab a coffee to go and they do that as well.About there being "no" climbs listed. That's waiting for the first kid to show up and name the 20 variations that have been done by others for many years, 30 if you include dry sand sit starts. Have at it!
This cluster of boulders appears to be mostly untouched and ripe for new problems. There is great potential for easier and moderate problems among the boulders. I think that there is also potential for some harder climbs to go up here. This is unlike some of the other areas listed on the coast as it would be ideal to have a pad. Many landings are directly onto other rocks. This area can be found at the Hug Point State Park. Walk directly around the corner from the Salty Arch boulder and you can find this small cluster.
