Climbing Near Sacramento, California

Some scattered bouldering can in or near the city of Folsom.Above the dam, most boulders are within the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area's west shores, with the best close to Beeks Bight. These require either paying an entry fee to park a car here to reach, or taking a rather long trek on foot, hoof or wheel.Other problems can be had along a scenic stretch of the American River in the city of Folsom, on both shores.The main spot that I know of firsthand are short easy routes next to Rainbow Bridge, on its northwest side, not exactly deep water soloing, more like shallow water soloing.Mind that infamous Folsom Prison if you go too far upstream on the south bank.Old town has some nice eats and drinks in quirky historic buildings.If you don't want to spring for that, the 'burbs everywhere have cheap eats. Old Folsom area from the 50 freeway, the light rail line during certain hours, or on surface streets; then walk or bike in.

Fairly secluded, mostly granite boulders, no ropes Drive north in Folsom Boulevard and turn left on Oak Avenue. There's usually parking at the station to the right. The trail begins on the left of Oak Avenue. Follow it for about 1/4 mile. Boulders will be on the right.

Very little shade throught the day. This is the most accessible area. Settled in a clearing about 50 feet west of the bridge, the boulders lie just off a main path that leads back to the power house from the river.
