Featured Trad, Sport, Bouldering, and other popular climbing routes and climbing areas Richmond, Virginia.
This is a fresh climbing area as of 2024. It is all slab at about 30 degrees to vertical. The routes here are more scary than they are hard. There are routes ranging from VB to V7ish. You would call these routes "High Ball Boulders" and you wouldn't need a rope if it weren't for it being right on the edge of high ball and rope climb. Combined with the fact that you start on a small ledge right above water, leading to possible falls backwards and head first into the shallow water we have opted for bolted protection instead of pads. Since these climbs are so short they are graded like boulders even though you are on a rope. There are two options for getting down to start the routes. 1) Rappel down from the bolts at the top. 2) Hike around but it is very steep and there are lots of thorn bushes. As of Oct/2024 there are 3 anchors (2 bolts each) in this area. Possibly more to come in the future since there are most certainly more climbs to discover. You can park near the Maymont parking area. Then take the North Bank Trail downriver. Takes under 5 minutes walking. Similar approach as if you where going to the cove.
Secluded bouldering area with high quality granite problems. Street parking is available at the intersection of Kansas and Hampton st. Lot parking is available in Maymont parking off Hampton st. 400 ft from trailhead. Follow the trail down the beginning of the North Bank trail extension then continue for about 0.5 miles till you come across a slabby boulder. "The Cove" will be located directly beyond this boulder.
