Featured Trad, Sport, Bouldering, and other popular climbing routes and climbing areas Panola, Oklahoma.
Southeast Oklahoma contains lots of sandstone, typically bouldering height. Aside from a couple publicly accessible established areas, there is lots more potential (mostly bouldering) but the majority of it lies on private land. We can only hope that down the road, more access options for climbers open up the region for more climbing. The most well known area in this region is Robbers Cave State Park. There is quite a bit of trad and toprope climbing in the main cave area, as well as bouldering in other areas throughout the park. The mountains in the SE portion of the state are also known as the Kiamichi Mountains, or Choctaw Country.
Approx. 18 routes ranging from 25 to 40 feet tall. Quality routes, mostly top-rope with some trad leads. No bolts nor chalk allowed. Many climbs have a smooth ironite covering with small but very positive inset holds and huecos, with sandstone slopers where there is no ironite. Bomber sandstone holds pro well, but there aren't many good protectable cracks. Small area often overran by rappelling boy scouts and tourons. Walk up and past the Low Angle Boulder Wall continue to follow the trail around into the Coral.
Robber's Cave State Park offers tent, RV, and cabin camping. The campgrounds have bathrooms with showers and electricity. There is a lot of top roping available, with many trees to use as anchors. The rock is an incredibly compacted sandstone with big flakes of ironite that makes some awesome lines to follow. No sport climbing, some trad. The rock is good enough for nuts and cams. From Wilburton, OK. go north on Highway 2 for five miles. On the right side of the road, you will find the entrance to the Robber's Cave campground, which is called Park Cabin's road. Turn left here. Then turn right on Robber's Cave Road. Follow this road for three miles to the parking lot. From the parking, follow the trail to the climbing area.
