Centex Sportsman Cave

2 Miles Away | 19 Routes

The horseshoe shaped lakeside cove is home to a massive roof that host super steep routes ranging from 5.11 to 5.13 on gritty limestone. Rock quality is fickle in the lower portion of the wall and gets better the higher up you go. This wall has all day shade, a good spot for swimming and slack line anchors bolted across the lower portion of the cove.It should be made clear that this cave is quiet chossy, not just in lower sections but in general. Rock climbing is inherently dangerous and this cave is no exception. This is US Army Corps of Engineers land, public access, and we need to be climb smarter and climb harder. Drive all the way down Centex Sportsman Rd to the public boat launch and park at the lake's edge. Facing the lake head right and walk along the shore. After several hundred yards, you will come to a concrete staircase. Walk up the stairs and follow the sidewalk left at the top. You'll pass through a small bouldering cave and then come to the main wall itself. From April through June (sometimes as early as March or as late as July) various bird species make nests in this cave and often times nest on certain routes. Cliff/cave swallows make mud nests on the rock, especially on Discotheque and Chossbuckler. If you see birds in or around these routes making habitats or if you see mud nests up on the route, please do not climb these routes. We need to be respectful of nature, this is their cave too. An owl has also been spotted making a nest on the ledge to the right of the start of the routes on the steep, left side of the cave, i.e. For Whom the Bell Tolls, Time Marches On, Feels Like Borrowed Time, and Being & Time. If you see an owl or its nest, please do not climb these routes or disturb the owl(s). As always, exercise common sense and don't be a ****.
