The Amphitheater

5 Miles Away | 4 Routes

Topping out on elephant ridge, this is a large cirque accessible via elephant ridge and some campsites. It is slabby on the north wall and the east wall is vertical rock punctuated by a large cave at the base. I was soloing when I explored this area, so was unable to climb any of the more challenging faces, but there is plenty of possible routes on the vertical/overhung east face. From beach: Head towards Elephant ridge. Either ascend the ridge and then follow those instructions or walk past the ridge, past Elephant direct and follow the bottom of the cliff until you arrive. From Elephant ridge: Descend 3rd class gully to the right or follow normal descent and take a right at the base. From camp: Head north on small, unmarked trails until you reach a tall cliff, and then follow path left along the base. You will reach the end of the cliff, but keep going and you will find another. Don't go right until you reach the amphitheater, there are several right turns before it which will take you to the top of Elephant ridge. There are a few ways to access the top of the wall, if you want to set anything up. The fastest way is up either the gullies or Angel's Highway. Additionally, there is a descent trail off elephant ridge which can also be used. The most adventurous, but direct route is up the backside of the amphitheater. Just to the west of the amphitheater, there is a left turn on the trail. Take it and follow it, traversing a high exposure trail up and along the edge of the crag.
