Climbing Near Lake Nacimiento, California

Salmon Creek Falls is a collection of huge water polished and lichen encrusted boulders surrounding the creek. The boulders are composited of dacite which is similar to andesite and rhyolite, but containing more silica and alkali oxides. The boulders nearest the creek are obviously smoother and more water polished while those further up the hill are rougher and more lichen and moss covered. Drive north on Hwy 1 from San Simeon toward Ragged Point. Salmon Creek Falls is 3.5 miles north of Ragged Point. Park on the north side of the creek just beyond the bridge.

Best climbing is on the boulder with an overhanging arête facing the ocean. Black rock is sharp and solid while brown rock is choss or sandy. After passing cambria on hwy 1 go past the san simeon pines sign for about a mile and take a left at the first dirt parking lot. U should see a large rock that looks like a skull in the distance. Walk towards it for about a mile along the beach The boulder is next to the skull rock.
