Climbing Near Huntsville, Alabama

This section of Monte Sano is accessed from the South Monte Sano Trailhead. It connects to several trails and has free, but limited parking. When exiting your car, walk towards (not directly) the big round green structure following the end of the gravel. There you should find a trail which shortly forks. Take a left for the quickest route to the rocks.Arrowhead Trail cuts through a 20-30 foot high rock passageway, primarily Limestone with sharp flakes and plentiful horizontal ledges and cracks. It takes are around 30+ minutes walking to get there. It's easy but sustain hiking so don't forget water.Some cracks and deep pockets seem sketchy to put your hands in but only small harmless insects and spiders(daddy long legs) has ever been spotted in them so far. However small animals have and can be in between the small caves between the fallen rocks towards the end of the site so beware. While adventurous people are sure to have scrambled these rocks in the past, no documentation for them exists. If FA or route name info becomes known, please message the page author to correct them. Only 10 minutes East from Huntsville. Take Governors Drive East, turn left and drive North on Monte Sano Blvd a short ways until you come across the Monte Sano South Parking trailhead on the right.The approach to the actual climbable rock is about a 15-20 minute walk (about 0.9 miles on Arrowhead Trail, starting at the Land Trust lot), easy but sustained hiking.

Limestone roof that is a 10 minute drive and 15 minute, easy hike from downtown Huntsville.Good holds and good movement on the roof with some other lines scattered about.Landing zone has been improved with sticks to make the roof climbs much more enjoyable. Oakwood Ave NE from the lowside going up you can park in the cul de sac or off the road. There is a small trailhead marker just below 2458 Oakwood Ave. Take the trail and follow "Buzzards roost" the ultimate area is atop a mostly dry creek bed. If you want, when you get to the creek you can simply follow that upwards and you'll the "roost".EDIT: While this approach is possible, it requires parking in a neighborhood next to somebody's house. Check the photos for a detailed map on how this area can be accessed via Landtrust trails.

Just East of Huntsville, AL, Monte Sano State Park is well hiked but not as popular for climbing. Overshadowed by Yellow Bluff, there are opportunities for bouldering yet to be developed if one hikes the trails. Some paid parking, some free parking depending on the area.
