Featured Trad, Sport, Bouldering, and other popular climbing routes and climbing areas Hermosillo, Sonora.
Big mountainous state south of Arizona, west of Chihuahua, north of Sinaloa. Vast climbing potential but very little development save for a few very nice sport crags near Hermosillo.Hermosillo is the capital and epicenter, and has most everything you could need from a modern city, except for really specialized climbing gear. There's an excellent bouldering gym there, GRID, and they can give you all the beta for Sonora; they also have a decent selection of basic gear (shoes, draws, harnesses, ropes) for sale. If coming from the US, heading south from Tucson through Nogales is the most common way. Hermosillo also has an international airport. Basaseachi(El Gigante, etc) is just to the east over the border in Chihuahua state. If entering Sonora from the US with a US vehicle there is no hassle with registering your car as long as you stay in the western and northern part of the state (from Guaymas north to Nogales and points west of there; also Agua Prieta to Douglas) because this is a special economic "hassle free zone" trying to encourage tourism by reducing bureaucratic regulation, the same system used in all of Baja California. If you go into eastern or southern Sonora you'll need to get your vehicle registered with a temporary importation permit.
Puerto Peñasco (aka Rocky Point or Arizona's beach) is a small fishing town south of the bordertown of Sonoyta/Lukeville. Fish Tacos, cold Sol, sandy beaches and Manny's! The temperature mirrors Phoenix most of the year but is dampened a bit by the gulf. From Gila Bend, AZ take Arizona Highway 85 South through Ajo to the border town of Lukeville/Sonoyta. Continue through Sonoyta towards Puerto Peñasco.
On the way to Cholla Bay, some boulders off to the left (south) of the main highway. Nothing too special, just something to do before hitting up JJ's. Best boulder we found is pretty obvious crack running up the center. V0/V1 stuff but the rock is pretty solid. Glass. This place must be a spot for the locals to booze then engage in the sporting competition of throwing the bottle against the rock really freakin' hard. Bring a rake/broom and tarp. The security guard from Cholla came out and watched us dick around a bit. The coolest thing about Mexico is how chill everyone is; if you're having a good time and not messing up their country, they're down to party. You'll see them on your left before you cross the security gate to get into Cholla Bay. Park next to the garbage dump area. 100' from the road
