Climbing Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Various clustered, tiny areas and styles/problems. You'd think with all the exposed rock there'd be A LOT more. But there is only a little bit of solid, appealing stone. Therefore there's only a handful of problems because there is A LOT of exposed, weak rock that I have found to be dangerous (adding to the danger is the shit landings that are all around on this steep hill/ridge side). Landings here range from totally safe, to if you fall you are likely to roll all the way down to the tracks. This is NO major area (like Mount Gretna, Whiskey Springs, Governor Stables, Coll's Cove, etc). I'm appreciative of the small amount of quality stone/problems that is here. No relation to South Central L.A! This is as South as you can get while north of the Mason Dixon Line. Harrisburg, the state capitol, is the biggest city out this way, with State College also being another popular starting point for collegiate climbers from its north side. Adventure can be had in Amish Country and other farmlands, and in the tallest mountains of the state in this stretch of the Appalachians (with its famous namesake Trail), and on cliffs eroded from the banks of rivers like the Susquehanna. There is a great deal of variety here. Safe Harbor is a well-known sport climbing destination in this area. The local Access Fund affiliate is the South Central Pennsylvania Climbers. Rocky slope that leads down to the Susquehanna just off of Route 15. Just a short walk from parking and some nice easy traverse/bouldery spots to arm up and mess around on. You can also climb down the slope pretty much to the river as well. Easiest place to park is in the parking lot just before the entrance. You can also park at the Rupley Memorial park just down the road and walk to the trail entrance. Short walk along the treeline to where the rocks are. From US 11/15, turn onto Stela St and follow to Poplar Church Rd. Continue straight onto Hillside Dr and hang a right onto Yverdon Dr. Finally turn right onto W Crestwood Dr where you can park at the Rupley Memorial park or at the trailhead outside a local business.
