The Pinnacle

29 Miles Away | 0 Routes

A small broken rock face on The Pinnacle, near Santa Clara (south of St Regis Falls, near Azure Mountain). The climbing routes are accessed from the mountain top, the top is accessed by an "official" DEC hiking trail. 4 routes reported online on,  New ADK Rock routes, 2 on the main face , and the other 2 are seen on the approach trail.   The cliff can been seen from the River Road (along St Regis River) just south of Shanley Road, from a distance it seems that there is a "good sized" rock face, broken, but steep. The cliff angle remains 3rd class near the base making inspection difficult, and the lowest 100 ft of the cliff is smooth and moss covered.   Looks like a cliff ready for some more exploration. Pinnacle Mountain access road (dirt of course) is close to Santa Clara , with the turnoff .6 mile south of the bridge over the St Regis River, on highway 458. Exact location can easily be seen on Google Maps. (44.633874 74.438830)Once off Highway 458, you'll be on the dirt access road, don't take the possible immediate fork left, ....go straight for about 3/4 mile to another fork, this time turn left and you'll hit the small parking area at 1.8 miles. The road continues, but there is a locked gate. You can hike the road to gain easy access to the cliff base if you want, there are no established trails up as far as I know.   The DEC trail takes you to the top ... where there is a picnic table and a nice view. Entire trail is .6 mile, 300 vertical ft, takes 20 minutes, and has no "desperate" sections. 1/2 way along the trail you'll see a long (500+ft , 50 ft high) rock band on your left with 1 route, and potential for many more. There is small outcropping further along with a single 18ft route.   At the top there are only small trees, most well back from the cliff edge, so bring lots of static line. There are 2 reported routes from the top, and one set of top anchors which I couldn't find in a brief look. The top is steep ledges, reported routes start 50 ft down.   The rock seems typical smooth ADK rock with limited protection opportunities, the lowest sections of the cliff transitions into steep vegetated hill, where care is needed when travelling.

Titusville

31 Miles Away | 0 Routes

An obscure rock face in Northern New York State close to Titus Ski Resort, located within Titusville Mountain State Forest, just outside of the Adirondacks. NOT easy to find and hike to, I suspect this rock face is rarely visited or climbed, my early impression is that the cliff face probably ISN"T worth a special trip unless you live in the area or unless you like backcountry adventure. Wet very and slippery during my visits, I hope to return when dry to better evaluate the area. Near the Titus Ski Resort in Northern New York, Malone is 15 miles north, Saranac Lake is 45 miles south. Area is accessed from Highway 30, take the Fayette Rd. sideroad. Travel about 4 miles (past part of Titus Ski) to a bridge/dam road intersection with Studley Hill (also known as Duane Road) and turn right onto Studley, travel this rough dirt road (which follows a scenic river) for about 2 miles (past a red house) until you see the Lee Road (unmarked) turnoff on the right, 44.43485  074.13234. Lee Road was reported as unpassable last year, however it's still drivable for a pickup, or a high clearance car if don't mind occasional scraping sounds. If you choose to park on Studley Road and hike the Lee Rd, it's an easy, mostly flat, single mile, and should only take 20 minutes. If you drive you'll see perfect "car camping" spots along Lee Rd.After 1 mile, Lee intersects  a swampy/ meandering stream system. From this point (44.43149  074.14043) you'll see the tip of the cliff on the right side Lee,( looking right), .  Follow the stream straight, then follow as it hooks right and goes uphill towards the cliff face. There are many easy to see cairns following the brook.  The hike will take 20-25 mins. In the summer it may impossible to see the cliff until you are "right there", there are many small hills and folds that hide the lower part of the cliff. The approach steepens as you get close with about 600 vertical feet of gain to get there.   Reported climbs are on the left side of the rock face, details can be found in Adirondack Rock. The right side is slabby, broken and less angled, winter ice routes purportedly are on the right side.
