Featured Trad, Sport, Bouldering, and other popular climbing routes and climbing areas Buffalo, New York.
There is a small cluster of boulders in this area but most of the developing has been focused on the large Rapids boulder. Pristine crisp limestone one of the most beautiful places to climb in Ontario. some climbs may be out on high water days. More details also available on Sendage. Do not deep water solo the cliffs over the river. The undercurrent is strongest where the water is calmest. It may appear safe but people get swept away on this river every year. Follow description to Deiter's rock but continue up river. the path will open up to a limestone plateau. At the end of the plateau you will find the rapids boulders. it is right on the path and hard to miss.
Deiters Rock is a short cliff of high quality limestone right next to the Niagara river. Be carful as the river rises and lowers periodically and the landing may be submerged in water. at time of writing there are 4 recorded climbs on this rock with room for a traverse nearby. We named area after our late friend Deiter who helped us establish the lines we put up that day. May his memory live on in all who enjoy climbing in this beautiful place. From the whirlpool area travel upriver 20ish minutes on small trails that go partially up the side of the escarpment. You will cross a small creek before descending back down to the river. There are no trails that follows the base of the river and you will get turned around by talus and water. we have tried. when you find yourself under the cable car you are in the right place.
This area stays cool even in the summer due to shade. Walk towards the river. Take the giant metal staircase down. After decending the stairs, turn right and follow the cliff band upriver until it turns left and down into the glen. Follow this trail, taking a right at a next intersection, this should lead to some metal stairs. Head down these and then keep left.
