Climbing Near Asheville, North Carolina

The wall across the creek.Remains almost entirely unclimbed to the slimy and unpleasant state it is in, but could offer some more challenging routes than its easterly neighbor if given some time and care.

Wall on the trailside aspect of the creek, where the bulk of climbing is located.Route names are uncreative, and  based on location. I have no info on first ascents/ascentionists, feel free to add info as you please. Eastern portion of dam closest to the trail.

Old stone dam flanking Bull Creek as it runs through WWC campus. This is a public trail, but is on college property. WWC does take groups here infrequently, but the area is mostly used for hiking. Certainly not a world-class destination, but it’s something to do between classes, and it is worth the gimmick to climb an old dam. The wall is much more solid than it might appear, but I’d trust any protection as much as a wet fart. You’re much more likely to break a stone free than to catch a fall.The dam is broken up into two walls. The East Wall is off the trail a few paces, and the West Wall is just across the creek. The East Wall is the only wall climbed at this point, to the best of my knowledge. It has a single bolt, most likely placed by an overzealous student.The West Wall has the potential to hold some climbs, but it’ll need some TLC to be anything worth doing.Good trees for natural anchors on top of either wall.Needs a lot of clearing; spider-webs, lichen, the whole shebang. Almost exclusively top-rope or highball. Surprisingly warm most of the time, almost convective climate. Climbs range from low 5th to loosely 5.8, and it’s short. Either drive up Riceville Road and park on one of the side streets, or walk from WWC main campus. Please don’t park in the Verner daycare lot or the NCOBS lot.Do NOT take dam pasture trail, you will not end up at the Dam. Take Bull Creek Trail.
