Tuckstop Boulder

3 Miles Away | 12 Routes

Glory be to the Long Haul Gods - Missoula finally has some good bouldering within 40 minutes of town! Surrounded by miles and miles of choss, this singularity of great stone is a true gift. The problems range from V1- Vdoube digits, so there's something for everyone. Don't expect a peaceful outing as the boulder is a mere sixty feet from the interstate. With that, dogs are really not a good idea. Tucked behind a nice grove of trees, the boulder sees all-day sun when there are no leaves on the trees, making for an excellent Winter zone. In the Spring-Fall, the boulder is tucked behind the leaves, dampening the sound of the interstate and supplying a bit of shade. The landings are flat as a board and the boulder is quite tall in the middle. Expect crimps, slopers, pinches and pockets. Geologists: is it metamorphosed sandstone? There are many hard linkups to do so get creative and brush the holds! Enjoy! Find yourself Westbound on Interstate 90 in Alberton. On the right hand side of the road, 3.6 miles West of Exit 75, you will see a large flat area that is completely off the shoulder of the interstate. You'll know it's the right spot because it has a 60ft choss cliff at the West end of it. Park here and walk approximately 150 yards further West along the Interstate, again staying off the shoulder of the interstate, to a small trail leading 30' through a thicket to the boulder.Alternative parking that is not on the interstate: Take Exit 75 and get on the West-bound frontage road paralleling the interstate. At 1.9 miles, shortly after the frontage road curves to the right crossing a small bridge, turn left onto an unmarked dirt road (this is shortly after a driveway that looks like it could be the road). Follow this to the trailhead for this strange Department of Transportation park. Park at gate and walk the old flat dirt road for one mile all the way to a large tunnel. Go through the tunnel and immediately turn left. Go straight downhill and find the boulder facing the interstate. It's a nice walk.
