This area is historically used by nesting falcons, hawks, owls or other raptors. Breeding season varies but is roughly February through July. Nesting raptors are protected by law.

If you aren't sure if raptors are breeding here, then listen and watch for defensive behavior such as screeching or diving (links to info). If raptors are breeding in this area please climb somewhere else and let other climbers know.

Pressures on wildlife can be immense and are multiplied by effects of climate change and pollutants. Choosing to climb away from nest sites reduces unnecessary stresses to the birds. Give these animals a chance to thrive.

Description

Get ready for an adventure!

Total hiking distance (if summit road is open) is approximately 1.6 miles from parking lot to boulder. Park at summit parking area next to Mt Lemmon Observatory gate. Hike southwest on a well established trail towards Lemmon Rock Lookout Trail #12, approximately .55 miles from the parking lot. Probably best to use trail app to find main trailhead. This trail skirts the east side of Rappel Rock from a distance and is very trafficked, so easy to follow. From parking lot to exiting the trail should be about 1.42 miles. Once at this point, exit the trail going due south down a steep hill for about .02 miles (literally a hundred feet) until the terrain levels out. Then hike east southeast towards "The Collective" off-trail style. Terrain at this point isn't bad. The distance from exiting the trail to the boulder is about .15 miles.

Best way to do it, if you're prone to getting lost, is pull up the coordinates on Google Earth (don't close the app once open b/c cell service can be a bit spotty and you could lose the map visuals if you don't have service), follow the instructions above, once you exit the trail, use the blue location dot to orient yourself directionally with the boulder location.
