Description

This scrappy area is located close to Tallinn, within an abandoned military base. The small cliff is adjacent to abandoned buildings and ammunition storage tunnels. Most people would call the climbing terrible, but at least it is climbing and it is close to the city! The better roped climbing option is at Lahe Pank (also called Leetse Pank), about an hour west of Tallinn.

There are a dozen or so routes here from about 5.7 to 5.10. Most are best top roped and for that, you'll want an anchor rope. The approach is flat and takes about 15 minutes (750 meters). The routes are in the trees, so will likely be wet if it rained recently.

Getting There

Park on a paved side street adjacent to a housing area with large white apartment buildings (coordinates of 59.401558, 24.613469). It is also possible to get to this location by public transportation.

Directly across the paved street from a small playground associated with the apartment complex is an old road leading into the woods. This is NOT the old road entering the woods at the end of the paved side street (shown on Google Maps as Moonalao).

Follow the old road into the woods; it will immediately bear left (ESE). Walk a total of about 700 meters on the old road. For much of the walk, there will be a swampy area on your right. Turn right on another old road and go roughly 50 meters. You will find a scrappy cliff with a number of tunnels and abandoned buildings. Google Maps has this listed as "Peter the Great Ammunition Depots" and "Astangu Tunnellaod." The approximate coordinates are 59.398126, 24.623880.

There are two separate climbing sectors in this abandoned military installation. This sector has at least three routes, the other sector about seven routes.
