Description Suggest change

While it says in the Backcountry Wilderness Area (Highlands Ranch Community Association BS for "we probably won't use this to build more houses here until we decide we want money") rules & regulations that climbing/bouldering isn't allowed, I've personally asked the people in charge if this cliff was alright to climb, and they kind of just shrugged their shoulders and said "I think so". It's technically also off-limits to non-Highlands Ranch residents, but I've literally never heard of somebody getting sent away because they forgot their recreation card, despite the signage at the trailhead. The routes are short and would have to be bolted to be lead, but alas, there's a fixed hardware ban issued by HRCA. So TR and possibly runout trad is the name of the game, for now.

Legal oddities aside, this cliff is only worth it for the truly down-bad suburban climber. The rock is Castle Rock conglomerate, same as Castlewood Canyon, but hasn't been cleaned up as of yet. The benefits include the short drive from the 'burbs and the spectacular view of the entire Denver metro area from the cliff. I'm sure there's more that could be established (looking at you, Rock Canyon high school climbers), but I had run into enough hornets, honey beehives, and hot sun exposure for the day and decided to head out before it rained. No wonder this cliff hasn't been developed....

Getting There Suggest change

From Monarch Rd. parking: drive 1.5 miles past Rocky Heights Middle School from the north, or 0.4 miles from Serena Ave. from the south, and park in the small dirt lot on the east side of Monarch Rd. Hike 0.2 miles, and go through the Backcountry Wilderness Area access gate, going left to follow the Wildcat Mountain Trail. Take your first left to stay on the trail, and go all the way to the top, where the trail does a loop at the cliffside. This is 1.2 miles total.

From Rocky Heights Middle School: park on the south end of the lot, then take the connector to the East/West Regional Trail. Keep right, and follow the trail uphill until you get to the Backcountry Wilderness Area access gate, going left to follow the Wildcat Mountain Trail. Take your first left to stay on the trail, and go all the way to the top, where the trail does a loop at the cliffside. This is 2.5 miles total.
