Description
Grand Specimen Rock or simply Specimen Rock is a large granite rock formation in the Bear Creek Canyon valley. It lies up valley from Sentinel Rock. The rock on Grand Specimen varies from good on the Directissima route to very poor in other areas. Raptors commonly nest on the ledges of the Directissima route and elsewhere in spring and early summer (~May-July). This rock was once common with rock hunters and was rumored to be the site of a small vein of valuable Alexandrite many years ago.
Getting There
Grand Specimen lies within Pikes Peak National Forest but is accessed via Bear Creek Cañon Park. The trailhead is located here: GPS coordinates are: 38.8190834, -104.8928522. Due to the threatened Greenback Trout that lives in Bear Creek and in light of the restrictions thereto, the best way to get there is to use the approach beta for Sentinel Rock and then traverse over to Specimen Rock. See the comments in the Sentinel and Specimen Rock page for more details.
