Description
This short south-facing traprock crag is located in Cheshire, CT. According to the Yale Mountaineering Club Journal of 1957, this area has been historically used since at least then for easy climbing practice, especially in colder weather. Although climbing at Mt. Sanford seemed to fall out of memory sometime after the journal's publication, it has found some local interest since 2024 after rediscovery of the journal.
Expect grades from 5.0 to 5.5 on well-protected, solid (yet blocky) rock. This cliff is a nice option for newer trad leaders.
Getting There
From parking (see map) on Route 42, take the Quinnipiac Trail (blue blazes) south for 0.95 miles until the scenic overlook. Make sure you take all of the right branches (west) of the trail. Once you find the scenic overlook with the visitor logbook box nailed to a tree, go just a little further until you see the descent gully and cliff on your right.
