Description Suggest change

A beautiful, steep canyon underneath Mt. Hopkins with a nice view of the Whipple Observatory to the east and Baboquivari far to the west. Many craggy granitic outcroppings poke out high above the Anza/Elephant Head trailhead.

Getting There Suggest change

From Tucson, drive south on 1-19 past Green Valley to the Canoa Rd exit (exit 56). Upon encountering the roundabout exit, take the east exit underneath the freeway to the frontage road, and take the Frontage Rd southbound along the freeway. In approximately 4 miles, take a left turn onto Elephant Head Rd. In about 1.5 miles take a right turn onto Mt Hopkins Rd and follow it for another 5 miles. Take a left onto FS Rd 183 (right before the observatory ground station), take it approximately 2-3 miles until the Anza/Elephant Head Trailhead. The trailhead is on your left in the large u-bend leading up to Antenna Hill. The popular hiking route to the Elephant Head follows the trail west. Rattlesnake Canyon lies along the trail to the east.

Consider bringing a high clearance vehicle for the last stretch of road, it would be possible in a sedan but you would have to drive carefully.
