Description
The Crops are a small talus field next to a spire on Kitson Ridge. It's a beautiful zone, with enormous old-growth trees sprinkled amongst the boulders and vine maples running across the landscape. Several of the boulders here are very large, including the area's premier venue, the Sarlacc Pit.
There's a decent grade spread, but most of the classic problems are V6+. This is as much due to the nature of the area, bad landings and steep overhangs, as it is the pattern of development. For those bouldering at moderate grade, the intro area offers some nice options, along with erratics throughout the zone.
The rock is an andesite of mixed quality. Some boulders, such as None Shall Pass, the Frosting Boulder, and the left side of the Sarlacc, are totally bullet. Others, including the Den, Burden of Dreams slab, and the 2-Piece Wall, are utter choss. It's good to have an understanding of the rock before attempting anything highball. It’s brittle when wet, so please abstain from climbing for at least 2 days after rain.
Development here is difficult. Glue is against area ethics and optimism about rock quality usually leads to bad boulders. If you choose to develop a problem, try and pick something that already has good rock. If you don’t, chances are it’ll be an eyesore. Working bad rock into an acceptable state can take dozens of hours, so you’re probably better off plucking something cleaner from one of WNF's many undeveloped bouldering areas.
Go out and have fun! Be respectful of the foliage, pick up your trash, and poop at home.
Getting There
Follow maps directions, then hike the well trodden trail for 15-20 minutes into the boulder field. You’ll trend up and right for a half mile before dropping into a ravine. The Intro Boulders are a couple minutes away, just up the hill on the other side. The trail occasionally follows fallen logs.
