Description
This auxiliary crag in West Rock State Park exists on the same west-facing ridgeline as Old Quarry Wall and Ballfield Slabs though it is located North of Route 15. Wintergreen proper starts a little more than half mile North of the fabled Barker Daniel Wall and is best accessed from the parking at Lake Wintergreen where you should expect to share the parking lot with hikers and paddlers, especially in season and on the weekends.
A word of caution:
Mixed Climbs: This is one area in Connecticut where Mixed Climbs, Sport Climbs, and Trad Climbs live side by side. Some of the established routes require a combination of fixed hardware and traditional gear to protect on lead. With just a couple exceptions, a bolt rarely indicates that a route can be lead with a rack of sport draws alone.
Loose Rock: Consistent with other areas on the ridgeline, loose and fractured rock poses a significant concern. Climbers and belayers should be vigilant and always wear a helmet. Some of the top outs here are laden with loose flakes and boulders and climbers should be mindful and manage ropes accordingly.
Although the routes aren’t as long as those found on the South Buttress (generally only 40-50+ feet here at WG)—the area offers a number of quality lines in close proximity.
Getting There
Park at Lake Wintergreen parking lot, follow the blue mark trail (go straight from the parking lot, no turns) and you will see a water tower. The blue trail continues on the left side of the water tower, keep following the blue trail, pass a road, and you will reach the top of the cliff. Walk slightly to the left and you will see a gully, walk down and use some unmarked approach trail (less than 5min walk) to reach the bottom of the routes.
For additional info, acquire Dave Fasulo’s Falcon Guide “Rock Climbing Connecticut” which offers a detailed approach description and is a valuable asset to any CT climber.
