Description
An outlier to the Washington Pass Area, the Porcupine Creek Wall is a north-facing, 800 foot wall of quality granite located on an eastern spur of Porcupine Peak halfway between Rainy Pass and Cutthroat Pass. The climbing season here is relatively short. Anticipate moderately steep snow at the base of the wall until mid-summer. The wall receives only morning sun and can be quite chilly. Perfect on hot mid-summer days, maybe less so on crisp autumn ones. Water is available in the basin until mid-late summer depending on snowpack, otherwise fill up when leaving the PCT.
Getting There
One of the easiest approaches for alpine rock in the state. Start from the PCT parking lot on the north side of Rainy Pass. Follow the PCT ~2.5 miles northbound to some minor stream crossings where the top of the wall can first be seen. Backtrack a couple hundred feet to open forest. Heading straight uphill and ever so slightly left you should reach a small talus field in the woods in ~5 minutes. Exit the talus field at its top left (cairn) and find a weakness of sorts angling up and right across steep duff. As the angle eases wind uphill looking for an exit right (cairn) to talus. This takes ~15-20 minutes from trail. Another 15-20 minutes of talus leads to the base of the wall. Total time 1.5-2 hrs. Three miles and 1600’ of elevation gain.
